Happy Halloween Treats in Japan 2021: Round Up

Now that it’s October, the Halloween season has just begun. Though Japan was a late-comer to celebrating this holiday, these days it is a BIG deal, with so many special foods, events, haunted house experiences and parties!  If you are in Japan during this spooky season, we recommend that you celebrate the holiday with some delicious Halloween-themed treats. 

Many shops and companies have released their Halloween lineup of scary and cute (mostly the latter) food. We created a round up of the best Halloween-themed treats that you can try in Japan this year to get into the Halloween spirit! We know many people can’t join us this year– but this is also good for some travel daydreams about an autumn adventure next year! Especially since each year the offerings get better and better! BOO! 

 

Mister Donut

Mister Donut’s Halloween lineup features five adorable doughnuts with the theme ‘a cute ghost has come to play’. 

  • Makuro Chocolate Cat (top left): filled with whipped cream and coated with chocolate
  • Fluffy Mummy (top middle): filled with whipped cream and coated with strawberry chocolate
  • Pink Franken (top right): coated with strawberry chocolate and sprinkles
  • Fluffy Ghost (bottom left): french cruller coated with white chocolate
  • Pon de Choco Devil (bottom right): pon de ring coated with chocolate and sprinkles

Krispy Kreme’s Halloween lineup consists of four delicious doughnuts. 

  • Halloween Jack Caramel Custard: filled with caramel custard and coated with pumpkin chocolate
  • Blood Strawberry Skull: filled with strawberry sauce ‘blood’ and coated with white chocolate
  • Spider Choco Custard: filled with custard and adorned with a chocolate spider web
  • Halloween Sprinkle: ring doughnut decorated with sprinkles in Halloween-esque colours

Kit Kat 

Apple Pie

Kit Kat’s new eye-catching purple Halloween wafer tastes of tart apples with a hint of cinnamon, perfectly replicating the delicious flavour of apple pie.

Ginza Cozy Corner

Disney Villains Collection

Ginza Cozy Corner is a popular Western confectionary store located nationwide. For Halloween, Ginza Cozy Corner released their Disney Villains Collection, which consists of 8 small sweets featuring villains from classic Disney films.

Starting from the purple cake at the top of the circle going in a clockwise direction:

  • Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty): cocoa sponge cake with mint white chocolate cream
  • Queen (Snow White): whipped cream tart filled with apple jam and topped with raspberry jam
  • Hades (Hercules): ramune-flavour whipped cream cake
  • Scar (The Lion King): chocolate and pistachio whipped cream roll cake
  • Cruella (101 Dalmatians): raspberry jam and chocolate whipped cream tart
  • Ursula (The Little Mermaid): raspberry cream roll cake
  • Captain Hook (Peter Pan): sponge cake with white chocolate whipped cream and raspberry jelly
  • Jafar (Aladdin): cocoa and orange mousse cake

Pumpkin Maritozzo

Maritozzo is an Italian sweet pastry that is currently very popular in Japan. 7-Eleven’s maritozzo is made with delicious pumpkin cream and a soft chocolate bun to create the Halloween-esque orange and black colouring.

Pumpkin Potage

Happy Turn rice crackers have been popular in Japan since the mid-1970s. Their new Halloween flavour imitates the heartiness of pumpkin potage.

Country Ma’am

Caramel Apple

These caramel apple soft cookies can be microwaved for a few seconds for a warm, sweet, and delicious Halloween snack.

IKEA’s ‘Halloween Fair’ dessert menu consists of various spooky sweets. 

Black Pancakes

Bamboo charcoal gives these pancakes a Halloween-esque dark colour. It is served alongside berries, whipped cream, a bat-shaped cookie, and a meringue eye. 

Black Sesame Pudding

This pudding is topped with a bright yellow cat eye.

Bloody Sundae

This ‘grotesque’ sundae consists of a vanilla soft serve topped with a finger-shaped biscuit with an almond nail that is covered with berry sauce ‘blood’. 

Tully’s Coffee

Caramel Pumpkin Latte

Tully’s Coffee’s Halloween drink tastes just like pumpkin pudding. The pumpkin latte has a drizzle of bittersweet caramel and is topped with pumpkin whipped cream. 

Haagen-Dazs

Caramelized Apple

Haagen-Dazs’ Halloween icecream is a delicious creamy caramel flavour with pieces of caramelized apple. The sweetness of the caramel and the tartness of the apples creates a perfect harmony. 

Sheraton Grande Tokyo Bay Hotel

Cafe Toastina in the lovely Sheraton Grande Tokyo Bay Hotel opened the ‘Halloween Sweets & Bakery’ that sells playful and adorable Halloween-themed food.

Jack O’Lantern Tart

This Jack O’Lantern tart is filled with cream and pumpkin brulee, covered with pumpkin mousse, and topped with pistachio cream and a chocolate ghost. 

Monster Cream Puff

The puff pastry at the bottom is filled with custard cream and apple compote, and topped with sweet potato and vanilla mousse. The monster’s cute face is made with murasaki-imo cream. 

Pistachio Franken

This pistachio mousse is filled with layers of chocolate brulee and griotte cherry jelly.

The mummy bread is made with a cocoa flavoured dough that is filled with chocolate custard, fresh cream, and raspberry jam, and covered with cookie dough. 

The Jack O’Lantern meat danish is a crispy danish pastry filled with beef bolognese, fried mushrooms, and béchamel sauce.
