The Magic of the National Stage: A Match Day Experience at Japan National Stadium

Jul 15, 2026

It’s another bright and sunny day in Tokyo, and there is a special feeling in the air: it’s match day at the Japan National Stadium! Before the stadium is even in sight, the atmosphere begins to build. Fans move through nearby stations in team colors, while groups gather outside convenience stores for bento boxes, snacks, and drinks. As the stadium draws closer, the calm greenery of Meiji Jingu Gaien gives way to color, noise, and anticipation.

For travelers visiting Tokyo, match day here should not be overlooked. The experience is not only about what happens on the pitch, but about joining the movement of fans, food, chants, and shared excitement on one of Japan’s biggest sporting stages.

A Stadium Built for Big Moments

The Japan National Stadium is one of the country’s most recognizable sporting venues. Completed in 2019, it carries on the legacy of the old National Stadium and became the main stage for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2021. Today, it hosts football, rugby, athletics, concerts, and much more.

Created by world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma, the stadium was built around the idea of a “forest stadium,” blending into the surrounding greenery instead of towering over it. The wood throughout the exterior gives it a warmer feeling than many modern stadiums, connecting the venue to the trees, paths, and open sky around it.

Travel to the Stadium and Settling In

Compared to many Tokyo landmarks or stadiums, the stadium is incredibly easy to reach. Kokuritsu-Kyogijo Station on the Toei Oedo Line is closest, while Sendagaya and Shinanomachi Stations are also nearby. Gaienmae and Harajuku Stations are other possible routes, too, though they require a longer walk. No matter what route you choose, it’s easy to see just how accessible this national landmark is.

Before heading over, check ticket availability. Not every match will sell out, but popular fixtures, finals, national-team matches, and special events can draw large crowds. If you have a match in mind, book ahead online or through convenience store ticket machines. If ticketing feels overwhelming, the Arigato Travel team can help find the right match or event for you!

We also suggest you make your way to the stadium well in advance. Arriving early gives you time to find your gate, take photos, grab food and drinks, and enjoy pre-match activities such as penalty kick games, giveaways, sponsor booths, or photo opportunities. Before heading inside, you can also explore the nearby Meiji Jingu Gaien, the Japan Olympic Museum, or the 1964 Olympic cauldron. It’s always easy to turn a trip to a sports match into a grand adventure, and with so much to do in the immediate area, your stadium visit can easily become a full-day excursion.

The Sound of Match Day

Now, for the main event: the match! What felt calm and spacious outside the stadium quickly becomes loud, bright, and alive once fans begin filling the stands. The colors of each club give life to the venue, and the sound of the crowd turns the stadium into something much bigger than a simple sporting space.

From my perspective, one of the most memorable experiences came from attending a match for FC Tokyo with a long-time friend. It was my first time being in the stadium, and we were able to sit pretty close to the pitch. The expectation was simple: enjoy some good footy. What came before the match, however, felt like a show of its own. Blue and red flags across the stands, fans chanted the player’s entrance, drones flew overhead displaying FC Tokyo’s logo, and fireworks lit up the sky. Before the ball was even kicked, the stadium had already created a memory.

The fans themselves bring an energy that is passionate, organized, encouraging, and respectful. You may see coordinated chanting, colorful flags, and supporters who stay engaged from the opening whistle to the final unexpected moments. For those used to other sporting cultures, this mix of intensity and order can be a fascinating experience. If you don’t know how to chant or feel nervous about joining in, do not worry. It is easy to get pulled into the rhythm through familiar tunes, clapping patterns, and call-and-response chants. Even if you do not speak Japanese, sports can easily become its own shared language. A close shot, a strong tackle, or a last-minute chance needs no translation or explanation.

Stadium Bites, Drinks, and Comforts

What would match day be without food and drinks? At football events in Japan, stadium food is part of the fun. Bento boxes, food trucks, beer, soft drinks, and quick snacks help shape the pre-match atmosphere. At the Japan National Stadium, visitors may find udon, onigiri, takoyaki, hot dogs, and other event-day favorites, depending on the match.

Those with dietary restrictions or vegan and vegetarian needs should definitely plan ahead, though, as only some trucks or areas may be able to accommodate certain requests. Food options may also change by event, so checking the home team’s website is a smart move. Lines can get long close to kickoff, and seating room may be limited, so be ready to balance your food in one hand and your drink in the other.

The Final Whistle

Once the final whistle blows, you may think that is all. However, seeing a match at the Japan National Stadium is more than the result on the pitch. It is a chance to experience Tokyo through movement, sound, food, architecture, and the shared excitement of fans from across Japan.

For sports fans, this is an easy recommendation. For casual travelers, it can become a surprising highlight of a Tokyo itinerary. So when planning your next trip to Japan, be sure to check what matches or events are happening at the Japan National Stadium. You may arrive curious, but by the final whistle, there is a good chance you will leave feeling like part of the crowd.
