Hi everyone! Have you ever been to Osaka? Lately, with the surge of tourism in the region, enjoying a quiet trip to the city is becoming a bit of a challenge.
However, in this blog, I’m going to introduce 10 unique and special Osaka experiences. These are perfect for those who have visited before or anyone who wants to explore the city while avoiding the busiest tourist traps!

Takoyaki food replica-making experience
Ever wondered how those incredibly realistic plastic food displays outside Japanese restaurants are made? In Osaka, you can actually learn the craft and create them yourself.
Shokuhin sampuru (food samples) originated in Japan between the late Taisho and early Showa periods. This unique craft helps diners choose restaurants visually and invites them inside by making the menu easy to understand without even opening a book.
For 2,000 yen, you can craft your own replica of Takoyaki, Osaka’s signature snack. By learning to work with various plastics and specialized molds, you’ll enjoy a hands-on activity that stands out from typical tourist attractions. In this workshop, you won’t just participate in a traditional craft; you’ll also have a fantastic Osaka souvenir to take home!
They also offer a course on making real takoyaki, which is ideal for kids who might get restless. Either way, it’s bound to be a delicious experience!

If you love retro gaming, this nostalgic arcade is a must-visit. Here, you can immerse yourself in a Showa-era atmosphere and see the types of games that defined past generations.
Operating since 1959, the center features everything from classic video games to vintage electromechanical machines. Even if you don’t speak Japanese, you can easily enjoy this arcade by testing your skills on the various machines, or stick to simple favorites like UFO catchers and Gachapon (capsule toy) machines.
If you have some time to kill and want to relax between sightseeing stops, or simply need to use up some spare change, this is the ideal spot!

Water picnic
Want to take your picnic to the next level? Osaka offers an activity that makes the most of its wide rivers. This concept promotes the charm of local waterscapes by inviting both tourists and locals to venture out onto the water. They host various events throughout the year, but one of the highlights is the “Night Water Walk Guided Tour,” held Thursday through Saturday between September 5th and November 9th.
On this tour, you’ll explore Osaka’s waterways on a small boat while taking in stunning nighttime views. You can bring your own food and drinks, making it perfect for a mini-party of up to six people! Daytime picnic experiences are also available, so be sure to check their website for details.

In Osaka, look for “Ebi-imo” (shrimp potato), a type of taro known for its distinct shrimp-like curve. At Cafe.yu, you can savor specialty dishes like Ebi-imo croquette rice bowls and sandwiches.
This cafe focuses on using healthy, local ingredients, making it a great place to sample genuine flavors in a lunch spot that isn’t overrun by crowds.

If you’re renting a car, take a drive along the Satsukiyama Driveway to reach Shubodai. From this vantage point, you’ll be treated to a vast, stunning view of Osaka that is hard to find anywhere else. While the daytime scenery is beautiful, the view at night is truly breathtaking as the city lights sparkle like jewels. Minoh National Park
Minoh National Park is famous for its majestic waterfalls and vibrant seasonal foliage. In the crisp winter, the snow-covered trees offer a serene, welcoming atmosphere in this secluded-feeling park.
However, I highly recommend visiting in mid-to-late June around 8 pm. This is when fireflies, a classic Japanese kigo (季語 – seasonal symbol) of summer, dance elegantly between the trees. It’s a magical way to experience nature away from the main tourist hubs. There’s also a terrace along the Minoh River where you can enjoy light snacks while waiting for the fireflies to appear!
