As we celebrate 10 years of Arigato Travel, I find myself reflecting not just on milestones or numbers, but on moments. On people. On stories.
Ten years ago, we set out with a simple but heartfelt mission: to connect travelers to Japan through food, culture, and local connection. What we’ve built since then is more than a travel company. It is a community, a shared story, and a responsibility we hold with deep gratitude.
Here are 10 lessons we’ve learned in 10 years.

People are the core of any healthy and inspiring company.
Finding the right people. Supporting them. Trusting them. Growing together.
Our guides, our travel designers, our admin and operations team, marketing and HR teams, our partners across Japan, and of course, all of our guests. Every single one of them shapes who we are. Skills matter, but heart matters more. When you gather people who care deeply, magic happens.

Our guests travel with us for two big and meaningful reasons.
First, to experience things they would not find without us. Hidden alleyway izakayas, tea farmers on misty hillsides, kimono silkweavers in a studio tucked away in an ancient street, skilled pottery masters working in countryside-studios, neighborhood stories that never make it into guidebooks.
Second, to make local connections. To meet real people. To be immersed in Japan, not just observe it.
That depth is what transforms a trip into something unforgettable.

History, culture, travel, and experiences are always about stories.
The best journeys are story-driven. The grandmother sharing her family recipe. The brewer explaining centuries-old sake traditions. The guest who arrives nervous and leaves confident and inspired.
We are not just planning itineraries. We are helping create and share stories about Japan. And those stories become cherished memories and ripple outward long after a plane lands back home.

Community means all of us in the Arigato family.
Guests. Guides. Staff. Partners. Artisans. Tourism boards. Train conductors. Travel professionals from around the world. Small restaurant owners. Shokunin. Farmers. Fellow tour operators.
We are all connected in this ecosystem of travel. When one part thrives, we all benefit. When one part struggles, we feel it.
Sustainable, organic growth with passion only works when the community is at the center.

Japan has more and more to offer each year. As travel professionals, it is both our duty and our joy to uncover and share the most meaningful experiences and connections across the country.
But we must strive to be part of the solution, not part of the problem.
Sustainable travel means more than being eco-friendly. It means supporting small businesses and local economies. It means respecting traditions and cultural nuances. It means educating our guests on local manners and helping them navigate Japan thoughtfully and respectfully. It means stepping away from the beaten path and traveling beyond what is famous, trending, or on the traditional bucket list.
Done well, tourism strengthens communities. That is the future we believe in.

In ten years, we have made mistakes. Many of them.
We have overpromised. We have learned hard lessons. We have faced challenges none of us expected, especially during the COVID years.
Humor helps. Humility helps more.
It is okay to fail. What matters is refocusing, learning, and moving forward with greater wisdom. Some of our strongest systems and best ideas were born from moments that did not go as planned.

You never know what is possible unless you Ask. Try. Experiment.
The experiences we now offer, the partnerships we’ve built, the regions we’ve expanded into, many of them started with a simple question: What if?
Being lifelong learners and staying curious has been key to our success so far. Japan is layered and endlessly fascinating. There is always more to discover, more to understand, more to share.

Fast growth can be exciting. But meaningful growth is intentional.
We believe in sustainable, organic expansion rooted in passion and quality. In building systems that support our team. In strengthening relationships before chasing scale. In ensuring that, as we grow, our values grow with us.
Ten years in, we are still guided by that principle.

Being in the moment and treasuring daily interactions with guests and partners is powerful. A shared laugh over ramen. A quiet bow of thanks from a shop owner. A guide going above and beyond.
At the same time, we must look ahead. Plan. Innovate. Prepare for what’s next.
Striking that balance between presence and vision is not always easy. But we strive for it every day.

Our name says it all.
Arigato.
We are forever grateful to be part of travel in Japan and around the world. Grateful to our founders for their belief and vision. Grateful to our team for their dedication. Grateful to our partners for their trust. Grateful to every guest who chooses to travel with us.
We try to bring that attitude of gratitude into each day, each itinerary, each email, each tour.
Ten years is both a milestone and a beginning.
Thank you for being part of our story. We cannot wait to write the next chapter together.
If you have traveled with us before, thank you for being part of our story. If Japan is still on your list, we would be honored to help you experience it in a deeper way.
