Are you are traveling to Japan in August or September this year and you’re looking for something original to do in Tokyo? Be sure to put the The Eco Edo Nihonbashi Art Aquarium on your to do list!
Day and night experiences
Held in the Nihonbashi Mitsui Hall (COREDO Muromachi building), the Eco Edo Art Aquarium and Night Aquarium are some of the coolest art events in Tokyo this summer. This living exhibition by Hidetomo Kimura, an Artist, fish tank designer and a fish collector of various species from around the world, is available in two different ways…
During the day, from 11 am to 7 pm, you can enjoy the Art Aquarium, featuring the largest collection of 10,000 Kingyo (goldfish in Japanese), displayed in various shaped fish tanks with lighting effects, projection mapping and other types of art installations and famous artworks.
Then, starting 7 pm every days, the exhibition turns into a delightful and more festive experience and this is what we tried a few days ago: the Night Aquarium.
Night Aquarium event – “GEIKO & MAIKO NIGHT”
Introduced to Japan from China around the Muromachi Period, images of Goldfish are now part of the Japanese culture and especially associated with the Summer season. This exhibit is perfectly timed to celebrate the season!
The theme of this summer’s Nihonbashi venue in Tokyo is: “Edo, Coolness of Kingyo”. During the Edo period (1603-1868), Kingyo (goldfish) took root in Nihonbashi as part of the common people’s culture.
During the whole period of the exhibition, several special events are held and we had the chance to attend the “GEIKO & MAIKO NIGHT.” In addition to the thousands of colorful fish tanks and goldfish-related art installations, we also had the chance to enjoy a stunning performance from the popular geisha Fumino and the dancer Mizuno from Kyoto’s famous Gion district.
Being sourrounded by all types of beautiful fish and super modern installations, and being able to enjoy more elegant and traditional Japanese culture at the same time was an awesome combination. Also, navigating through all the amazing installations while sipping a cup of Japanese Sake is kind of a special experience!
