Staff of the Month August 2019: Jenkie from Tokyo

 

Today we’re more than happy to introduce you to Jenkie, from our Tokyo team. This month is a bit special because Jenkie is not a guide but she is very important to the whole company and our operations at Arigato Japan!

 

1.   Can you tell us a little about yourself?

 

I’m Jenkie one of the Admin of Arigato Japan. I was born and raised in the Philippines. Married with a 6 years old son. I’m a Marketing graduate from PATTS College of Aeronautics. Worked as a sales person for almost 18years before i joined Arigato Japan. My passion is doing and learning something new.

 

2.  We usually interview guides but you’re not! Could you please explain briefly your role at Arigato Japan? And what do you like about your job?

 

As an admin staff, I oversee everything from scheduling and communicating with our guides, doing payroll , accounting work and other back office needs.
The best part of my job is being able to communicate with different people. Learning about new things.

 

3. You are originally from the Philippines, can you tell us about the thing that surprised you the most when arriving in Japan?

 

Discipline , respectfulness and consistency. These are three things that can only be found in Japan. It is astounding how even small children know how to clean up after themselves, follow rules and behave properly in public.
The level of respect in this country is to the highest level and is reflected in all facets of the Japanese way of life. One is respectful of time so everyone, including bullet trains, are on time. Service is to the highest level anywhere you go because there is so much respect given to the quality of experience one offers. Consistency is expected in Japan for things work on efficiency on a daily basis. These things really surprised me when I first arrived in Japan last year. and im so in love with this country.

 

4.  What is your favorite Japanese food and why?

 

Ramen – this is one of Japans must try food! I consider this my soul food – the broth in ramen means everything! Tonkotsu (pork broth) in particular is my favorite. Tonkotusu broth is creamy and delicious – it lingers in your mouth and you are left wanting for more!

 

5.  Do you have something to recommend to people traveling to Tokyo? (something to do? A restaurant you love? etc?)

 

Try very local hole-in-a-wall places and explore different flavors! Go out of your comfort zone and experience Japan’s diverse regional food! The choices are just countless, Japan is the best country for food so enjoy every single moment of it!
