Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring

Are you an art lover? Have you ever dreamed of seeing one of the most famous paintings in the world up close? Well, here’s your chance! The “Girl with a Pearl Earring” is coming to Osaka this year, and it might be the very last time she ever leaves the Netherlands! This is a super rare opportunity. The painting usually lives in the Mauritshuis museum in The Hague, but it’s traveling to Japan while the museum undergoes renovation. You can see this iconic girl with her mysterious smile at the beautiful Nakanoshima Museum of Art in Osaka. Expo Summer Festival

The Expo Summer Festival is the largest in the Kansai region, running for 27 days on specific dates from July 24th through September 23rd (keep in mind that the festival doesn’t take place every day). This year’s theme is “Summer of the Reiwa Era, Summer of the Showa Era,” and the festival transforms the park into a magical wonderland with the “Illuminight Expo” lighting up the iconic Tower of the Sun and a 50-meter display with wind chimes and streamers. For the first time, the Dream Pond, site of nighttime shows during the 1970 World Expo, will be illuminated in blue, adding to the enchanting atmosphere. Food lovers can enjoy the “Expo Night Market with Beer Garden”, offering a huge variety of street food, izakaya-style dishes, sweets, and drinks, along with daily stage entertainment like Bon Odori dancing, DJ booths, live music, and karaoke. Fireworks Plaza by the pond lets visitors safely enjoy handheld fireworks (bring your own or buy on-site). On September 13th, the festival features a special “Mangeki Summer Festival” comedy show instead of the night market.

Kishiwada Danjiri Festival

Yatai Festival

Autumn Equinox Ceremony

Looking for a peaceful and special way to experience Japanese culture? Shitennoji Temple holds its Autumn Higan for one week around the autumn equinox. During this Buddhist tradition, families come together to remember and honor their ancestors through meaningful ceremonies. The week starts on September 20 with a memorial service at Yamato Cemetery (2 pm), and another one at Shitennoji Cemetery on September 21 (2 pm). The biggest day is September 23, the Autumn Equinox, which has a service at Amida Hall (12 pm) and a quiet sunset watching moment at 5:20 pm, a peaceful time to think and meditate as the sun goes down. More services happen on September 25 (9:30 am – 3 pm), and the week ends with a closing service on September 26 (3:30 pm). But it’s not all quiet! Toyono Cosmos

Looking for a sea of pink, white, and yellow flowers? Then head to the Toyono Cosmos Village in northern Osaka! Every autumn, about one million cosmos flowers bloom across a huge 1-hectare field (that’s about the size of two soccer fields!). The best part? You can walk along the paths and be completely surrounded by colorful cosmos that grow as tall as an adult! It’s a perfect spot for a relaxing day out, taking photos, and enjoying the fresh mountain air.

Moon Viewing Festival

Have you ever watched the full moon rise while listening to ancient poetry? That’s exactly what the Kangetsu-sai (Moon Viewing Festival) is all about! This enchanting festival celebrates two of Japan’s most beautiful poetic forms: tanka (with a 5-7-5-7-7 syllable pattern) and its shorter cousin, haiku (5-7-5). The highlight? Priests climb to the top of the shrine’s famous arched bridge, Sorihashi, and read selected poems aloud to the moonlit crowd. Anyone can submit their own poems for a chance to be heard! After the readings, the night comes alive with traditional dances performed under the glowing sky. Sumiyoshi Taisha has been connected to poetry for over a thousand years. Celebrated in Japan’s oldest poetry collection, the Man yoshuu, the shrine was believed to inspire and protect poets. Legend even says the famous poet Fujiwara no Teika dreamed of the shrine’s gods, inspiring the title of his diary, Chronicle of the Bright Moon.
