A Quick History

Historically, Fukui Prefecture originated from Echizen no Kuni (越前国) and Wakasa no Kuni (若狭国). During the Edo period, it was governed under a feudal system, with territories divided between direct control by the Shogunate and various feudal domains. However, this system was later abolished, and in 1881 (Meiji 14), parts of Ishikawa and Shiga prefectures were merged to form the present-day Fukui. Fukui (福井市, Fukui-shi), the capital of Fukui Prefecture, is rich in history, culture, and resilience. Despite enduring destruction during World War II and a major earthquake in 1948, Fukui earned the nickname “Phoenix City” as a testament to its remarkable recovery.

Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum

For a deeper dive into the world of prehistoric beasts, you should not miss the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum, a must-visit venue for dinosaur lovers of all ages, especially young dinosaur enthusiasts. Its highlight features a large dinosaur skeleton with 43 full-scale displays, including a diorama simulating the most realistic dinosaur battle scenes. Katsuyama Dinosaur Forest Park

Maruoka Castle

Recovered from ruins, Maruoka Castle is considered one of Japan’s oldest castles. Although it completely collapsed in the 1948 earthquake, only a few years later, in 1955, it was rebuilt using the same parts and materials that could be collected from the ruins. With its historical value and architectural beauty, Maruoka Castle is regarded as one of Japan’s most important cultural treasures. According to an old tale, whenever enemies attempted to attack, a thick mist would mysteriously rise to shield the castle, acting as a natural defense, which is why the castle is also known as “Castle in the Mist” 霧の城 (Kiri no Shiro).

Eihei-ji Temple

Daihonzan Eheiji Temple is located in the middle of a quiet valley in Fukui Prefecture. The temple was established in AD. 1244 by the Zen master and remains the center of Zen Soto Buddhism to date. Currently, there are more than 100 monks dedicated to the religious practices and activities within this temple. It also offers tourists the opportunity to participate in Zen rituals and stay overnight at the temple to experience a quiet lifestyle and practice true Zen meditation.

Tojinbo Cliff

Tojinbo Cliff is a natural sculpture created by the stacking of rocks in various shapes. It is recognized as one of the most famous places in the Hokuriku region and is registered as a natural monument of Japan. The scenery was caused by waves from the Sea of Japan hitting the cliffs until the rocks began to reshape into huge rock pillars. Spanning along the coastline for more than 1 kilometer, it offers diverse and ever-changing scenery that depends not only on the time of day you visit, but also the time of year. From clear skies and blue seas to sunsets that bathe the Sea of Japan and its surroundings in orange, and even snow-dusted winter landscapes blending into the sea. There is simply no going wrong with this natural wonder.

Echizen Ono Castle

Established in the 16th century, Echizen Ono Castle is considered one of Japan’s most renowned castles. It has a unique architecture with a five-story castle and a large stone wall. During its heyday, it was one of the most powerful fortresses in Japan and was the residence of many powerful nobles, but it was destroyed in the 19th century. During the Meiji restoration period, and after being abandoned for many years, Echizen Ono Castle has now become a popular tourist destination. Now attracting tourists from all over the world to visit the beautiful architecture and learn its historical significance.

Yokokan Garden

Fukui City may be home to many beautiful gardens and impressive parks, but Yokokan Park is a standout treasure among them. This garden was originally built as a resort house for the Matsudaira family, a powerful noble family in the Echizen period (1603–1868), to the Meiji period (1868–1912). This garden is surrounded by a large pond that can be seen from every angle of the park, adding to the feeling of traveling back in time whilst traversing the garden’s ground. Furthermore, if you walk through the pink cherry tunnel that runs through the middle of the city of Fukui, you’ll see more than 600 cherry trees blooming in the spring, creating a magnificent pink tunnel. Fukui Cherry Blossom Festival

For anyone who is travelling to Fukui during Sakura season, you should definitely not miss out on the Fukui Cherry Blossom Festival (late March – Early April each year). The festival showcases a breathtaking scenery of thousands of cherry blossom trees, originally planted through the efforts of the Fukui Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Fukui City Tourism Association, creating a beloved springtime experience. Echizen and Kanazu Fireworks Festival

In the summer (July-August), Fukui hosts a variety of vibrant festivals, including the Echizen Fireworks Festival in Echizen City and the Kanazu Festival in Awara City, where traditional Japanese folk processions come alive with dances, fireworks, and events across multiple venues. One of the main attractions is the “Furusato-odori” dance, where nearly 2,000 participants parade and perform along the main street in front of Takefu Station, adding to the lively atmosphere of the festival. Ski Jam Katsuyama

If you visit Fukui during winter (Mid December-March), you must not miss skiing at Ski Jam Katsuyama, a perfect destination to enjoy skiing in the snow. It is known as one of the largest snow resorts in western Japan, featuring a 5,800m long trail and 12 diverse runs suitable for all skill levels, spread across three mountain parks.
