Finding your personal style in a city as visually rich as Tokyo involves more than just picking out new items. Color Me Tokyo provides a practical way to navigate your aesthetic journey with a certified consultant by your side. During my recent visit, I had the pleasure of meeting the founder, Connie, and the lovely analysis experts Amy and Aya. The experience is as charming as it is professional, set within a beautifully designed and welcoming space that immediately puts you at ease.

Using a specialized Japanese method, they analyze how different tones and silhouettes interact with your natural features, from facial structure to skin undertones. These sessions offer an English-led experience that equips you with the knowledge to make intentional, lasting style choices. You leave not just with a palette, but with the clarity to express your authentic self and a newfound sense of self-assurance.

I’m thrilled to introduce you to Connie, and explore how her expertise in Japanese color theory and personalized styling makes the city’s vibrant creative scene more accessible and meaningful for every guest.

Hi Connie. Could you tell us a bit about yourself, your background, how you became interested in fashion, and your current role at Color Me Tokyo?

My name is Connie, and I am a certified image consultant and the founder of Color Me Tokyo. I’m also a mother of three. Before moving into this field, I worked in IT.

Fashion was something quite new to me, although I had always been interested in it. I wasn’t particularly knowledgeable about style or color, but living in Tokyo inspired me to explore it more deeply and eventually turn that interest into my profession.

What inspired the start of Color Me Tokyo, and how has the company evolved to serve the international community?

Becoming a mother of three really changes how you take care of yourself. One day, I saw myself in photos and felt shocked by how I looked tired, shabby, and even older than my husband. It didn’t reflect how I felt inside, and I knew I wanted to change that. I decided to dedicate time to myself and reconnect with my appearance. That led me to train as an image consultant, and eventually to start Color Me Tokyo, with the hope of helping others regain their confidence as well.

It began with helping friends, then gradually grew to serving expats living in Tokyo. Today, we welcome clients from all over the world who visit Japan and want to experience image consulting for themselves. From the beginning, I wanted to make this accessible in English, so all of our consultations, materials, and reports are provided in English.

Are your services just for women, or do you have specific programs designed for men or non-binary clients as well?

Everyone deserves to discover the beauty and style that speaks to them, so we welcome anyone who wishes to explore this through our services. Our standard menus are designed for both women and men, but we have also worked with non-binary clients and clients ranging in age from 7 to 80. Wanting to look and feel your best has no limitations. If clients have specific needs or requests, we are always happy to find the best way to accommodate them.

For those unfamiliar with the concept, what specific types of styling experiences and packages do you offer, and how are they priced?

The most basic place to start is Color Analysis, where clients learn the colors that best suit them for clothing, hair, accessories, and, for women, makeup. From there, Face Analysis helps narrow down suitable clothing styles, hairstyles, glasses shapes, and patterns. We also offer Bodyline Analysis to recommend the best clothing fit and proportions.

All of these services are included in our Full Menu session, which also features a basic makeup lesson for women and optional personal shopping for men. Clients can also choose individual services, such as Color Analysis only, or a combined Color and Face Analysis menu. Pricing ranges from ¥25,000 to ¥49,000 for women’s menus, and up to ¥58,000 for the Full Shopping menu for men.

Could you walk us through the most popular experience from start to finish? What can a guest expect on the day?

Our signature experience is the Total Beauty package. We begin with Color Analysis to identify the most harmonious colors, followed by a basic makeup lesson. During the lesson, clients practice applying makeup themselves using Japanese techniques that create a natural, simple look suitable for everyday wear. We then explore different glasses shapes, patterns, and earrings to find the best proportions for the client’s face.

Next, we move on to Bodyline Analysis, identifying the client’s body type and demonstrating suitable necklace lengths and belt positions. Once the analyses are complete, clients are invited to relax in our lounge with a drink while we conclude the consultation and review our recommendations.

The session is quite intensive and typically takes over two hours. Afterward, clients receive a detailed session report by email, along with a small gift to help them identify their colors while shopping.

Our men’s signature menu follows a similar flow, with a focus on basic skincare instead of makeup, followed by personal shopping after the consultation.

You mention a “Japanese Method” for global clients. How does this differ from the color analysis people might find in, say, the US or Europe?

At its core, the concept is similar. We focus on the overall harmony between the eyes, skin, and hair, and identifying which colors best enhance a person’s natural features. Where it may differ is in the styling approach.

In Western styling, the process often starts with the body, whereas in the Japanese method, we begin with facial characteristics and build the style from there.

During the personal shopping portion, how do you select which districts or boutiques to visit with a client?

Before the session, clients complete a detailed form, which helps us understand their budget, preferences, and sizing. We also do some pre-shopping to check stores in advance. On the day itself, we factor in the results of the session to further narrow down the districts and boutiques that we feel will suit the client best.

Do you focus on major international brands, or do you help guests discover local Japanese designers they might not find elsewhere?

We want clients to experience style in Japan, so we usually start with local Japanese brands and stores, and try to avoid places that are already widely available overseas. That said, depending on the client’s taste and style, we may also include international brands when appropriate.

What is one “insider tip” you can give to our readers about finding their best style while navigating the streets of Tokyo?

Keep your eyes open: Tokyo is full of inspiration everywhere, from busy high streets to quiet corners and even the outskirts of the city. You can start with reliable basics from Uniqlo or Muji, then visit shopping malls like Lumine or Parco for a concentrated selection of Japanese brands, especially if you’re short on time. If you have more time, areas like Shibuya or Harajuku offer countless casual options, while Ginza is ideal for more high-end shopping. Most importantly, enjoy the experience while you’re here. And for those who want to narrow things down and avoid the hassle, we’re always here to help.

Anything else you would like to share with our readers?

Some people believe that looking good is something you’re born with, or that image consulting is only for celebrities and superstars. But that’s not true. Everyone deserves to look and feel their best. We work with people from all walks of life: business owners, retirees, students, and homemakers.

One of our academy students once shared that growing up, she focused entirely on studying and excelling academically, but never learned how to invest time and effort into her appearance. She realized she lacked knowledge about beauty, color, and styling, and wanted to understand what works and what doesn’t. After learning the theory, she became more confident in meetings, shopping, and everyday styling.

Image and appearance are skills, just like any other. Anyone can learn and develop them. You don’t have to be born with it; you just need to take the first step.

The team’s supportive and detailed analysis provides guests with a genuine understanding of their specific color palette and flattering silhouettes. I highly recommend a visit. I now feel significantly more empowered and intentional every time I go clothes shopping!
