A Season of Gratitude: 31 October 2026 Affirmations Inspired by Japan

Oct 1, 2026

BY Lauren Shannon

October arrives in Japan with a wonderful shift in energy.

The heavy heat of summer finally begins to loosen its grip. Mornings feel cooler. The light changes. Autumn flavors return to restaurant menus and convenience store shelves. In some parts of the country, the first leaves begin their transformation, while elsewhere we wait patiently for the brilliant reds and golds still to come.

But October is not necessarily a quiet month.

For many of us, autumn brings one of the busiest stretches of the year. Travel picks up, projects accelerate, calendars fill, and suddenly the end of the year no longer feels very far away. Around the world, there is a similar sense of momentum as we head toward the festive season and everything that comes with it.

So this October, our affirmations are not really about slowing everything down.

They are about finding harmony within the movement.

And for that, we are looking to a very Japanese idea…

和 Wa: The Strength of Harmony

Wa (和) is usually translated as harmony, but like many beautiful Japanese concepts, the English translation only tells part of the story.

Wa is about people living and working together with mutual respect. It values cooperation, consideration, and the understanding that what we can accomplish together is often greater than what any one of us can accomplish alone.

That feels especially meaningful during a busy season.

When life speeds up, it is easy to focus only on our own list.

What do I still need to finish?

What am I behind on?

What is the next deadline?

What haven’t I accomplished yet?

Wa invites us to widen the view.

Who helped me get here?

Whose work made my work possible?

Who quietly solved a problem before I even knew it existed?

Who taught me something, encouraged me, covered for me, challenged me, made me laugh, or simply showed up when things were busy?

There is room for personal pride within Wa. We should recognize our own hard work. We should notice our progress. We should celebrate when something that once felt difficult has become something we can now do with confidence. But perhaps there is a particularly beautiful kind of pride that says:

Look how far I have come, and look how far we have come together.

That is our theme for October. Not ego. Not endless productivity. Not rushing toward the next achievement without appreciating the last one.

Instead, humble pride, shared accomplishment, gratitude, and harmony.

Why We Keep Coming Back to Gratitude

There is some real science behind these little monthly practices.

Research into gratitude has found that regularly noticing and appreciating the good in our lives can support well-being, positive emotions, and life satisfaction. Research into self-affirmation also suggests that taking time to reconnect with the values and relationships that matter to us can help us keep perspective, particularly when life gets busy or stressful.

But for us, it doesn’t need to be complicated. Affirmations aren’t magic words, and gratitude doesn’t mean pretending everything is wonderful. They are simply small opportunities to notice. To notice what is going well. To remember what matters. To recognize our own progress and the people who helped us make it.

And that feels especially important in October.

When our calendars are full and our eyes naturally turn toward everything that still needs to be done before the end of the year, this practice gives us a reason to look back too. What went well? Who helped? What did I learn? What have we accomplished together?

Sometimes gratitude is simply giving ourselves enough time to notice that there is already a lot worth celebrating.

How to use:

  • Start with one a day. Read the day’s affirmation in the morning, during your commute, with your coffee or tea, or before opening your laptop.
  • Pause long enough to mean it. Don’t race through the words. Give yourself a moment to connect the affirmation to something real in your life.
  • Make gratitude specific. Instead of simply thinking, “I’m grateful for my team,” think about one person and one thing they did. Sometimes the smallest moments deserve the biggest thank you.
  • Notice your own progress too. Humility does not mean making yourself smaller. Give yourself permission to recognize something you handled well, learned, finished, improved, or contributed.
  • Look for Wa in action. Notice moments of cooperation around you: someone holding a train door, colleagues solving a problem together, a chef and server moving effortlessly through a busy restaurant, neighbors preparing for a local festival.
  • Use gentler language when you need it. If an affirmation feels too absolute, change “I am” to “I am learning to” or “Today I will try to.” The goal is reflection, not perfection.
  • Share the practice. October’s theme is harmony, after all. Send an affirmation to someone who helped you, thank a teammate, or ask a friend what they are proud of this month.

Moving Into the Season Together

There is something wonderful about accomplishment.

Finishing something difficult. Seeing an idea become real. Realizing that a skill you worked hard to develop has become second nature. Looking back and discovering that you are further along than you thought.

We should celebrate those moments.

But October’s invitation is to look slightly beyond ourselves as we celebrate them.

Japan’s idea of Wa reminds us that harmony is not about everyone being identical or one person’s contribution disappearing into the group. It is about understanding how individual strengths can work together, how consideration creates trust, and how our actions affect the people around us.

As autumn deepens and the world begins its rush toward the festive season and the end of another year, perhaps this is exactly when we need that reminder.

Notice what you have accomplished.

Be proud of the work.

Thank the people who helped.

Help someone else along the way.

And every now and then, look up from the busy calendar and notice the season changing around you.

There is still plenty ahead.

But there is also so much behind you that deserves a quiet moment of gratitude.

This October, may we find pride without ego, momentum without losing ourselves, and accomplishment made richer by the people who share the journey with us.

May we find our Wa.
