Interview with Tamacha – The Fascinating Tea Tablets made in Japan

Tamacha.jp is a company on a mission to change the way we experience tea. They’ve made a twist and introduced a unique thing – tea tablets! Crafted in collaboration with seven esteemed tea masters, Tamacha offers a collection of seven distinct flavors, each capturing the essence of a different tea variety.

Could you please introduce yourself to our readers and share about your role in the company?

We are a startup company established in Fuji City, Shizuoka Prefecture that is working to create products based on tea. Our Chablets were born from the idea of “anyone being able to easily enjoy delicious tea.” They are created using a different process from the currently existing tablets. Tea leaves are compressed without preservatives so that we are able to draw out the intended natural flavor of the tea. In a time when people are moving away from drinking tea, we hope that our unique Chablets will show the appeal and enjoyment of tea.

We’d love to know more about your name, “Tamacha?” And where did the idea of making tea tablets come from? What are the benefits and differences between regular tea bags and tea leaves?

The name “Tamacha” comes from the roundness of the tablets (“tama” meaning ball). Tea is not only tasty and beneficial to our health, but there is a secret side to tea that many people are unaware of. There are numerous ways to enjoy drinking tea, as well as its deep and rich culture and history. Busy modern people pressed for time may be passing it by without knowing its charm. We created our tablets with the idea in mind of a tea that was easier to pick up and make.

Tea bags don’t allow the tea leaves to spread out as much as they should, and therefore, tea made from tea bags is not nearly as delicious as that made from a teapot. Additionally, making tea from a pot takes some getting used to: the amount of tea, the time to let it steep. Tamacha preserves the natural flavor, umami, and health benefits of tea, while anyone can make it without having to worry about measuring tea leaves.

What made you think about the idea of making ‘’Today’s Goyo Tea’’ which is a mixture of 7 different tea flavours, and how did you select the 7 tea masters?

Today, there is a major event, so I want to be prepared. Tomorrow, I want to make the time spent with an important person special. “Today’s Goyo Tea” was created based on the idea that there is a different tea to enjoy every day of the week, based on that day’s events and emotions.

We acquired the assistance of the 7 tea masters from Fuji City and Fujimiya City by choosing from masters who are especially particular about manufacturing style, quality, taste, and individuality.

In a world where lower-quality industrial teas are an issue, how does Tamacha cultivate relationships with the masters/farmers? How do you choose them?

In order to create a tea that answers various requests, we are working in conjunction with Fuji City and Fujimiya City to restore and redevelop the tea industry.

What is your favourite tea flavor, and which food do you like to pair it with? What would you recommend if someone wants to consume it daily, or for those who just want to try out Tamacha for the first time?

For example, we recommend our new Shizukaori tea leaves to go with dried sweet potatoes. We also recommend our herbal tea for madeleines or marron glaces.

We have something for everyone: those who want to enjoy orthodox Japanese tea, those who want to try refreshing, non-astringent tea, or those who want to try unique teas containing herbs. It’s an excellent assortment for anyone.

What are your recommendations for giving gift sets from Tamacha?

We recommend our 7 tea variety pack so that customers can compare flavors and find the one they love the best. Especially for people who are not in the habit of making tea in a pot and, therefore, don’t know the “correct amount of leaves” or “time to steep.”

We noticed that you have 7 tea masters and 7 types of tea that suit morning, afternoon, or night with distinct flavours. Is there a reason for picking 7? Do you plan on expanding types/masters?

The concept of “Today’s Goyo Tea” is to savor a different flavor of tea every day, depending on your mood or plans. Therefore, we selected seven teas to go with the seven days of the week.

At this point in time, we don’t have any plans to change our lineup, but in the future, we may decide to update “Today’s Goyo Tea.” We look forward to hearing your feedback!
