Tugs-of-War: Remarkable displays of strength

Experience Okinawan history through its Great Tugs-of-War, with the most famous events held in Naha, Itoman, and Yonabaru between July and October.

The Naha Great Tug-of-War is a fierce contest involving a rope that weighs nearly 40 tons and stretches 200 meters. As the largest event of its kind, winners are traditionally allowed to take a piece of the rope home for good luck. Itoman’s version is noted for its solemn parade to memorialize ancestors and a dramatic “stare-down” between participants. In Yonabaru, costumed performers parade through the streets before the main event, followed by concerts and fireworks that add to the fanfare. Boat Races: Rich maritime traditions
