Kangetsu-sai or Moon-viewing Festival at Sumiyoshi Taisha

Let’s start our journey with one of Osaka’s biggest summer festivals: the Sumiyoshi Matsuri (festival). Sumiyoshi Matsuri, also known as Oharae (purification), is a festival held to ward off misfortune, diseases, and other bad omens. Not only will you be able to admire the beautiful architecture of the Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine in which this three-day festival will be conducted. But you can also enjoy witnessing the rich cultural aspect of the numerous rites and celebrations carried out during this event. For instance, one such ceremony is the “Nagoshi no Harae Shinji” (summer purification ceremony), where a procession of maidens, children, and dancers, all dressed in Muromachi period costumes (1336-1573), passes through purified rings made out of plaited grass.

Established over 1800 years ago, Sumiyoshi Taisha is one of Japan’s oldest Shinto shrines. Dedicated to the Sumiyoshi Kami, or the God of the Sea, it has long been a place of worship for fishermen and sailors. Every September, many visitors head to the shrine for the traditional Kangetsu-sai or Moon-viewing festival, which celebrates the beauty of the autumn moon. Visitors gather at the shrine to take a look at the moon’s reflection within a serene pond located on the premises. The festival also features classical Japanese musical performances, poetry readings, and tea ceremonies, all performed in the soft glow of the autumn moonlight. You can also take a glimpse of one of the shrine’s most iconic features: the Sorihashi Bridge, an arched red bridge that gracefully spans the shrine’s pond. It offers a picturesque view and symbolizes the transition from the mundane to the sacred.

Kishiwada Danjiri Matsuri

One of Osaka’s most thrilling and energetic festivals, the Kishiwada Danjiri Matsuri is a must-see event in September. In this 300-year-old festival, more than 30 teams of locals race massive wooden floats (danjiri) through the streets of Kishiwada. On top of each float is the daikugata, or the carpenter, dancing away in their own, unique style. Toyono Cosmos no Sato, or Toyono Cosmos Park

Each year, as summer fades and autumn begins, Toyono Cosmos Park bursts out with a million colorful flowers, attracting visitors from all over. Held annually in the rural town of Toyono, on the outskirts of Osaka, the Toyono Cosmos Park celebrates the blooming of thousands of cosmos flowers.
